White blood cells are important body protection cells. Of these white blood cells are many types and including neutrophils, eosinophil, basophils, lymphocytes and monocytes.

Neutropenia is a decrease in the neutrophils in the blood system. Neutrophils have the function of killing and invading micro-organisms .Neutropenia can be caused by a number of cases including tuberculosis.Agruulocytosis is the term used to describe a more severe neutropenia while granulocytopenia is used to refer to low neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils but mostly neutrophils.

The common signs and symptoms of neutropenia are low fever, sore mouth, odynophagia (difficulty in swallowing), skin lesions, and sudden weakness, dry mouth (stomatitis),growth retardation in children just to mention a few.

Only a laboratory test such as complete blood count and a differential white blood cell count can be used to diagnose neutropenia.

This is a treatable condition and should be handled by qualified personnel only.
