HYPOTHYROIDSM

As opposed to hyperthyroidism seen in the previous article, hypothyroidism is also a disorder of the thyroid gland which is part of the endocrine system.

It is due to the deficiency of thyroid hormone. When caused by autoimmunity then it is referred to as Hashimoto disease.

The signs and symptoms include;

Fatigue

Hair loss

Weight gain

Depression

Goiter

Joint pain

Constipation

Cold intolerance

Hoarseness

Excessive menstrual bleeding

When chronic severe hypothyroidism with respiratory depression,hypothermia and stupor occur, it is called Myxedema coma.
